Epilepsy and Special Education

Epilepsy can develop at any age and can be a result of genetics, stroke, head injury, and many other factors. It can also can cause developmental delays and brain damage. Recurring seizures are also a burden for those living with brain tumors and other disorders such as cerebral palsy, mental retardation, autism and a variety of genetic syndromes. There is a strong association between epilepsy and depression: more than one of every three persons with epilepsy will also be affected by depression, and people with a history of depression have a higher risk of developing seizures.

Many students that experience seizures qualify for special education supports and services. However, creating an appropriate IEP for a student with Epilepsy can be challenging given the unique needs and health factors that are often present. Safety is often a concern when children are in school and at risk for experiencing seizures. Services may include: aide support, counseling, nursing support, occupational therapy, speech therapy, physical therapy and more. In certain cases, placement may become a concern warranting a smaller environment such as a non-public school to appropriately meet the student's needs.

If you have concerns regarding the appropriateness of your child's special education supports in school or feel your child may need special education support but doesn't yet qualify, contact our office today.
