In a tragic turn of events, a 13-year old special education student, Ben Barnhard in Kensington, Maryland was shot and killed by his distraught mother. Margaret Jensvold then killed herself.
Ben's mother had become inscreasingly overwhelmed by the stress of her son's special education needs and school placement with the local school district. It appears that she fought for years regarding her son's special needs and finally decided she could no longer take the stress. Ben had been placed in a private special education school at his mother's expense and she was dealing with extreme financial issues.
The stress of raising a child with special education needs can become overwhelming at times, especially when coupled with a child that is not appropriately progressing in school or who is not placed in the appropriate educational environment. In situations where families feel they have no options for their child and want to give up..... DON'T! You have many rights as parents on behalf of your child. There are due process procedures in place that protect your child that you can use to enforce your child's rights! DON'T GIVE UP!
